There were more lives saved in Virginia in 2019 through the generosity of organ donation than ever before. According to data from the Organ Procurement and Transplant Network (OPTN), there were 1,146* organ transplants in Virginia last year. This includes donations from both living and deceased donors. In 2018, there were a total of 916 organ transplants.
The OPTN is a unique public-private partnership that links all professionals involved in the U.S. donation and transplantation system. United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) serves as the OPTN under contract with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). UNOS is a private, non-profit organization based in Richmond, Virginia.
Right now, more than 2,400 Virginians are in need of a life-saving organ transplant. Give hope to those who are waiting by registering to become a donor.
